A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR
Welcome
to Saint Margaret of Scotland parish, established in 1874. Geographically,
we are located a few blocks from the expressways that make it possible to drive
to New York City or to Memphis, Tennessee without ever facing a traffic light.
But we want you to come here! Our church is beautiful. Our parish school is thriving with close to
500 youngsters. The great Father John Smyth has a shelter here for infants
and teens. A magnificent new gym and community center inspires the neighborhood and
provides us with championship teams and healthy young people. The School
Sisters of Notre Dame founded the school and are still an inspiration. Earl McKay, our
home grown principal via St. Xavier University, administers the school where excellence
is the expected and where no child is turned away. 1,200 + people worship at
Mass each weekend and the Blessed Sacrament is the center of all that goes on here,
and there is plenty going on day in and day out.
Come join us!

The annual Parish Tea will be held on Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 3 PM. We will honor long time parishioner Retired Police Superintendent Fred Rice as recipient of our annual Father Robert Sheridan Award. We will also honor Ms. Paula Conrad of Com-Ed. As always, we will give special thanks to Mr. Richard Driehaus, the incredible UPS under the leadership of Jim Winestock, Father John Smyth of Standing Tall Foundation, and Cardinal George who sends his blessings. We will also honor Sister Joellyn, who represents the best of all efforts by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, and is still working today.
This year our school enrollment has reached 400 students, and we continue to provide the tools the students will need to succeed, as well as to provide a solid fountain through a Catholic education. In recent months, we have repaired the roof of the rectory and the damaged rooms therein, repainted the church, and just recently completed school repairs necessitated by the terrible flood we suffered last spring. Our gym continues to serve as an oasis for recreation and friendship in a desert of poverty and crime, again thanks to the wonderful benefactors of St. Margaret's.
This event has become a tradition through which we recognize not only our longevity (133 years!) but also an even where we celebrate those who have helped us to grow and prosper over many years.
We hope you will be able to join us. We also would appreciate your financial support to continue our work at one of the finest parishes in the city.
Yours in Christ,
Father Dan

A letter from Father Mallette on the annual Parish Tea
St. Margaret of Scotland School is in full swing for the 131st year. We have almost 100 more pupils than last year. God's poor are being served. It costs $2,500.00 to cover one pupil for one year.
The devil, through gangs and drugs, roams around seeking to ruin the lives of the young, but St. Margaret stands as a pillar of hope twenty-four hours a day. With Father John Smyth's work, through the 6:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. programs of our school and gymnasium, under our great home-grown Principal, Earl McKay, St. Margaret hums along with life.
On Sunday, October 30, 2005, beginning at 3:00 P.M., we will hold our annual Parish Tea. We will honor Fr. John Smyth, St. Margaret's Man of the Century and the finest priest I have ever known. We will also honor Myron Gray, Regional Director of UPS. Jim Winestock, U.S. Director of UPS, may be able to join us as well.
The 2005 recipients of The Father Bob Sheridan Award will be Maureen O'Connor and Rita Harth.
Please bring or send in a sacrifice. It will be used to aid God's poorest. Thank you!

A special letter of thanks from Father Souffrant to St. Margaret parishoners and friends:
God works through the pastor and the people of Saint Margaret to promote education in Haiti by helping start a Teachers Training Center and , later, a secondary school. Saint Ignatius School near Port-au-Prince stands as a monument to the generosity of this parish.
The partnership between Chicago Saint Margaret Parish and Haiti Saint Ignatius School works nicely. For almost 20 years, each and every summer, I have been enjoying your hospitality and taking home your contributions to a second collection. This financial aid helps build a hall, the Dan Mallette Hall, to house a Teachers Training Program now called Teachers College.
After training, our teachers needed employment. In order to provide employment, we started a secondary school called Haiti Saint Ignatius High School.
As this education ministry was developing, came to us, in the mail a recognition certificate from the Jesuit Secondary Association School in troubled Haiti.
Thank you for supporting Saint Ignatius.

Letter from March 8th, 2004
Dear Father Dan,
A tragedy is unfolding in Haiti. I am writing to ask that you and the people of Saint Margaret say a special prayer for the Haiti people torn apart by political strife. My school has not yet been looted as it happened to the nuns living not far from me.
See you in June if I am still alive.
Claude Souffrant
