This part of the website
offers you a chance to walk down memory lane. Remember the church
bulletins? We have gone through some of the oldest ones we could
find, hidden in the dark recesses of the rectory, to give a glimpse of
parish life in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Most of the following pages
mention things primarily related to the church building itself, though there
are a few others that were just too interesting to pass up. But there's
more to these pages than just those particular items of interest. Maybe
you'll see names you had forgotten all these years. Maybe you'll see
articles about an activity you were once involved in. Maybe you'll see
advertisements on the back page that will bring back some fond memories. Or
maybe, you'll just read these and notice a wide grin appearing on your face.
We have also come across a
program for the semi-annual juvenile boxing show that took place in 1967.
Thanks to Pat Shine from Charles Street for sharing this with us.

Anyway, enjoy your trip down
memory lane.

April 5, 1959
The announcement of the new
novena and blessing of the Infant Jesus of Prague shrine took place on April
13, 1959. This statue is still exhibited on the west of the main altar
next to the Blessed Virgin Mary side altar.

July 31, 1960
The Longwood Manor
Athletic Association arranged for Bill Veeck to speak to men of the parish,
and their sons, at the Washington Heights Boosters Hall at 10134 S.
Vincennes.

August 28, 1960
Fr. Traut announced
an increase in school tuition, the first in 10 years, from $6 per quarter to
$10 per quarter. Of course, if a family had more than 2 children in school
at the same time, tuition was due only for the oldest 2 children.

January 8, 1961
Formal announcement
was made of the four new statues that were added to the main altar. As can
be seen in pictures prior to this date, there were four empty niches in the
main altar, following the original design of Charles L. Wallace, the
architect of the church and main altar. Sometime in late 1960, the same
company that constructed the main altar was commissioned to create and
install statues for Sts. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Those statues are
still part of the main altar.

July 16, 1961
The new washrooms in
the church have been completed and are now ready for use. Of course,
children had to be accompanied by a parent because of their tendency "to
make a plaything out of such facilities."

March 11, 1962
This appears to be
the first announcement of the Athletic Association's intention to sponsor a
school boxing event. This evolved into a very successful program that was
the talk of the schoolyard for years to come.

March 25, 1962
The bulletin
announces that St. Xavier College (that's right, it was not a university
yet) was presenting a debate on integration. The debaters were Fr. George
Clements and our very own, though much younger, Fr. Daniel Mallette. When
asked about this recently, Fr. Mallette did recall this debate and the many
others that he and Fr. Clements put on to make their points about
integration.

June 24, 1962
Remember the traffic
jams after each Sunday Mass? Well, apparently they were longstanding
problems. This bulletin urges drivers using the "newly paved parking lot
across from the Church" to observe the "enter" and "exit" rules.

November 3, 1963
Sister Mary Helene
and faculty invite parishioners to check out the new "spacious, beautiful
and well equipped library." At the same time, they can look at the
closed-circuit TV studio across the hall from the library.

November 22, 1964
In accord with the
changes to the liturgy, the bulletin mentions the "new altar in church which
makes it possible for the priest to say Mass facing the people. At this
time we may use the altar only for special occasions."

April 4, 1965
With the use of the
new hymn cards and prayer cards "new card holders have been installed to
help keep our church neat." These card holders are still in place in the
pews.

September 5, 1965
The bulletin explains
the new confessional method which, in summary, is "In the pew - examine your
conscience and say your act of contrition. In the confessional - confess
your sins (use same formula),... and listen to words of forgiveness."

November 17, 1967
The program tells the whole story. Who can
forget the excitement generated by these semi-annual events? Notice
the professionalism as there were announcers and even a physician on hand.
